Cross Keys Battlefield Tour

With stunning views of the Blue Ridge and Massanutten Mountains and the lush, rolling hills of the fertile Shenandoah Valley, this 17-mile loop tour is suitable for both automobiles and bikes. The winding country roads are a little hilly but generally lightly travelled. The tour begins and ends at the Port Republic Museum with stops at the major areas of action at Cross Keys Battlefield. Several of the stops have short hiking trails with interpetive signs. The final stop is a visit to Cross Keys Vineyards for lunch and a tasting before returning to Port Republic.

  1. Begin at Port Republic Museum, 8691 Water St, Port Republic, VA 24471. From the Museum, make a right onto Port Republic Road (253) and head north for 3.2 mi. Turn right onto Charlie Town Road (676) for .4 mi. Turn left onto Goods Mill Road (708) for .9 mi. The Goods Mill Interpretive Area will be on the left by the Civil War Trails sign. You can park on the mowed grass on the side of the road and walk down to the interpretive signs. After the second sign, follow the trail to the left for one more sign.
  2. Continue on Goods Mill Road (708) for 1.1 mi and turn left onto Port Republic Road (253) for 1.0 mi to a Battlefield interpretation site on the right.
  3. Continue on Port Republic Road for 0.9 mile to Mill Creek Church. A marker is located across the parking lot by the cemetery.
  4. From Mill Creek Church, turn left and head back up Port Republic Road for 0.8 mile and turn left onto Battlefield Road. Continue on Battlefield Road for 1.2 mi to Union Church and Cemetery. There is an interpretive sign in front of the church.
  5. From Union Church, head back down Battlefield Road toward Port Republic Road for 1.2 mi. Turn right onto Port Republic Road (253) for 0.1 mi and turn at the first right onto Artillery Road. Stay on Artillery Road for 0.5 mi and turn right onto Bowtie Dr. Stay on Bowtie for 0.1 mi and park on the gravel near the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation kiosk on the right. Here you can walk the short Artillery Ridge trail to the site of the Confederate left flank above Mill Creek.
  6. From the Artillery Ridge trail, head back down Bowtie Dr and turn right onto Artillery Road for 1.0 mi. Turn left onto Cross Keys Rd (276) for 1.0 mi. Turn left onto E Timber Ridge Rd (668) for 1.0 mi and turn left into Cross Keys Vineyards.
  7. From Cross Keys Vineyards, continue on E Timber Ridge Rd (668) for 0.4 mi and make a left onto Mill Creek Church Road (672). Follow Mill Creek Church Road for 0.7 mi and turn right onto Shady Grove Road (671). Follow shady Grove Road for 1.5 mi and turn right onto Port Republic Road (253) for 1.6 mi back to the Port Republic Museum on your left.
