Part of the Virginia Military Institute museum system, the Virginia Museum of the Civil War is located at New Market Battlefield in the Shenandoah Valley. Here there is a self-guided walking tour of the battlefield including the 'Field of Lost Shoes' where brave VMI cadets lost their shoes in the mud while marching toward the Union line, and the 'Bloody Cedars' where the 54th Pennsylvania made a valiant stand against overwhelming Confederate attacks. The restored and recreated Bushong Farm that withstood the fierce fighting at New Market also lies along the tour. The farm features the original Bushong family home as well as recreated dependencies including a wheelwright shop, summer kitchen, ice house, blacksmith shop and barn.

There is an extraordinary stained glass wall mural commemorating the Battle of New Market, and the museum theater screens the Emmy Award-winning film Field of Lost Shoes about the VMI Cadets who fought at New Market. Museum amenities include a staffed visitor center, gift shop and picnic area.

The museum offers lots of events and activities including a re-enactment of the Battle of New Market as well as kids' adventure camps, a Christmas on the Farm celebration, and a Halloween Spirits of New Market tour.
