Discovered by Dr. Walter S. Amos - a geologist from Winchester - in 1937, Skyline Caverns is one of four caverns in the world that features rare anthodite formations. These perfect six-sided calcite crystals grow down from the ceilings in nine of the cavern rooms at Skyline. The rare beauty of the anthodites is protected from cave bats and humans by large-mesh wire screens through which it is easy to view the impressive yet delicate formations.

Open year round, Skyline Caverns offers daily guided tours of a wonder world 60 million years in the making 250 feet below the earth's surface. The tour is accessed by 12 stairs that lead down to a walking path that winds down through the cavern. The packed dirt path is wide and mostly level and even, although it is wet and possibly slippery in places. The cavern rooms and passageways tend to be fairly wide with high ceilings. The guided tour lasts one hour and takes visitors past all of the famed anthodite formations. At the end of the 1-mile tour 61 stairs lead back up to the surface.

Skyline Caverns is located 1 mile south of the Skyline Drive entrance in historic Front Royal. In addition to the caverns, Skyline features a gift shop, picnic area, nature trail and an outdoor Enchanted Dragon Mirror Maze. There is also a Skyline Arrow miniature train that operates seasonally. And ... it seems that Skyline Caverns has a little Civil War history of its own. The Caverns are situated on the very spot of the rendezvous between Stonewall Jackson and the notorious Confederate spy Belle Boyd during the Battle of Front Royal. Skyline Caverns is located quite close to historic downtown Front Royal where Belle Boyd's cottage still stands along with many other historic sites as well as opportunities for shopping and dining.
